The 2006 Man Booker Prize (Nominees)

The 2006 Man Booker Prize (Nominees)

The Man Booker Prize for Fiction represents the very best in contemporary fiction (from the UK, Ireland, and the Commonwealth). One of the world’s most prestigious awards, and one of incomparable influence, it continues to be the pinnacle of ambition for every fiction writer. It has the power to transform the fortunes of authors, and even publishers. In 2004, not only did Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty reach the bestseller lists, but previous winners The Life of Pi (2002) and Vernon God Little (2003) were also amongst the bestselling books of the year. Congratulations to last year's winner John Banville for his novel The Sea.

Why not the Orange Award? Or the Whitbread Award? Why this one? Why an English Award? Being the curious bookworm that I am, just wondering how you came to choose this one.

In the small, nomadic tribes in which I travel across this vast internet, this one seems to get the most press. Someday I'll include more, but this is it for now.

So you deem it worthy of merit because the "nomadic tribe press" of the internet deems it as such? Therefore, you haven't actually read most of the authors/winners/books that received the prize? Not to be an antagonist or anything...

I post the nominees because I find, in many places, people referencing this award as if more people would care to know who the nominees are. I try to provide relevant information. I've never heard of many of these authors. But, it is a list of books from which one may be able to select a book they've never heard of that they may enjoy. It's a concentrated list of what a small group of reviewers considers some of the best books of the year. I have listed 19 books above that may be worth reading if you are stuck trying to decide what to read next.

I'm reading Kalooki Nights right now. I notice it is on the 2006 list. It is fantastic so far. Lovely, lovely writing. But pretty deep and very detailed so it is def. the slowest book I've read all year.
