The writing was well done and obviously I have selected a few gems from the text. I just didn't like the minor things like the story or the character development...

Be careful. I played tennis with the author's daughter in high school, and it does take place in my hometown. (I will not admit I have not read the book yet to say whether or not I agree with your opinion).
