Man on Fire

Man On FireA bodyguard vows to exact revenge upon anyone who profited from the kidnapping of the young girl under his protection.

Creasy (Denzel) is a drunk with a jaded past. We are not sure exactly what he used to do, we just know it was not run of the mill. His friend (Christopher Walken) gets him a job as a bodyguard for a Mexican family. His job specifically is to guard the daughter, Pita (Fanning). He is anti-social has lost touch with life. Pita pulls him back to reality. She teaches him there are things worth living for...then she gets kidnapped. Creasy then decides to kill everyone who had anything to do with Pita being taken from her family; with her being taken away from him.

I liked this movie a good deal. Denzel Washington is capable of pulling of great performances, but he does not always deliver. He delivered in Man on Fire.

The show, however, may have been stolen by Dakota Fanning. Only 10 years old when the movie was released, she had great chemistry with Washington.

My favorite Denzel Washington movie/performance is Fallen.

FletchChevy Chase is at his hilarious best in this suspense-packed comedy thriller based on Gregory McDonald's best-seller. Irwin Fletcher, a.k.a. Fletch (Chase), is an investigative reporter who's constantly changing his identity. While working on a drug expose, Fletch attracts the attention of a strange businessman (Tim Matheson) who wants to be killed so his wife will inherit more insurance. The wily Fletch senses a scam, and soon he's up to his byline in frame-ups, murder, police corruption and forbidden romance. It'll be the story of the year, if he can stay alive to meet his deadline!

Even better than the National Lampoon's Vacation series, Chase's performance in Fletch is second only to that in Caddyshack.

This classic movie is, unfortunately, lesser known to anyone who did not grow up in the 80s. Chase's one liners are hilarious, though not always quotable due to lack of context. Fletch goes back to the old school funny that only the Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray class can provide. This is either one of the funniest serious movies or one of the most serious funny movies. Whichever it is, you should definitely see it if you have not.

I Heart Huckabees

March 8th, 2005

I <3 HuckabeesKindhearted but confused activist Albert Markovski (Jason Schwartzman hires a pair of screwball existential detectives (Hoffman and Tomlin) to help him find the meaning of life. All the while, a sexy, French author (Isabelle Huppert) is trying to throw a wrench in their plan by seducing Albert's mind and body.

Fox Searchlight is recently taking over my movie watching world. They have been releasing some great movies and I Heart Huckabees is no exception to that.

This was another weird, "thinking man's" type comedy. I will admit that with the humor being so dry, sometimes it is hard to realize that they are in fact making jokes. Movies that are on somewhat of an even keel would be The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic. That is not to say that if you did not enjoy those you will not like I Heart Huckabees either.

The cast was very good; including but not limited to Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Naomi Watts, Mark Wahlberg, Jude Law and Isabelle Huppert.

The basic premise is Jason Schwartzman's character being caught in the middle of a feud between existentialism and nihilism as his life begins to spiral out of control. He simply seeks the meaning of his "coincidence". He has had three sightings of the same doorman around town. He wants to know the significance. That is why he seeks out the detectives. Along the way, the detectives attempt to address his battle with Jude Law's character. Isabelle Huppert plays a French author who teaches the opposite end of the spectrum from Hoffman and Tomlin. Is it that we are all the same? Or is it that we are all nothing and all that exists is chaos?

"How am I not myself?" The movie follows a few characters as they ask some pretty hard hitting questions.

Playing Schwartzman's "other", Mark Wahlberg's performance was the highlight for me. No, I never expected to say that.

I Heart Huckabees is one I am adding to my DVD collection.

The Fisher King

March 1st, 2005
The Fisher KingWith Robin Williams, Jeff Bridges, Mercedes Ruehl. Directed by Terry Gilliam. A radio "shock jock" is fired when his jokes inspire a man to shoot several people in a restaurant. With nowhere to go, the DJ hits the streets where he meets a mentally-unbalanced man whose life was perfect until his wife was killed at the restaurant.

I really have not seen a movie that I enjoyed on this level in awhile. The performances of both Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams were so fun to watch. It was like they were dancing. I began to think about just how underappreciated I think Jeff Bridges is by most people. I think he does a great job, especially in The Fisher King. I do not feel as though I need to justify Robin Williams' career to any of you...

It was a truly unique film that I enjoyed very much.

Understand that in my euphoric state of review for this movie I am not saying it was otherworldly. It was not the best movie I have ever seen. I do not mean to rave about it. It was simply very good.

Have you ever had a movie that just tapped something loose inside you and gave you that "hmmm, this is a really good movie" feeling?

One prime example of why I liked the movie was when Parry sees Lydia come walking through the crowd and all of a sudden all of the hustling and bustling commuters are waltzing around the room. The only two people not caught in dance are Parry and Lydia. Once she is out of his sight, the dancing was no more. It was this little detail set among others of the sort that show that maybe there was a little extra effort put into direction of The Fisher King. I have to say it was appreciated.

ChinatownRoman Polanski's brooding film noir exposes the darkest side of the land of sunshine, the Los Angeles of the 1930s, where power is the only currency--and the only real thing worth buying. Jack Nicholson is J.J. Gittes, a private eye in the Chandler mold, who during a routine straying-spouse investigation finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a jigsaw puzzle of clues and corruption. The glamorous Evelyn Mulwray (a dazzling Faye Dunaway) and her titanic father, Noah Cross (John Huston), are at the black-hole center of this tale of treachery, incest, and political bribery. The crackling, hard-bitten script by Robert Towne won a well-deserved Oscar, and the muted color cinematography makes the goings-on seem both bleak and impossibly vibrant. Polanski himself has a brief, memorable cameo as the thug who tangles with Nicholson's nose. One of the greatest, most completely satisfying crime films of all time.

Look at the cast (Nicholson, Huston, Dunaway). Look at the director (Polanski). I will be so bold as to call Chinatown a classic. It fits the bill.

This is another movie that I had wanted to see for a long time that I never got around to renting. Thanks again to online DVD rental services, I was able to see a movie I have otherwise not gotten around to seeing.

I am having a hard time articulating what I liked so much about this one, but believe me when I say that I really liked it.

I love the mysteries throughout which you are constantly trying to sleuth along side the main character(s). My favorites, however, are the ones that take you in circles. I want plot twists. I want to be led in directions that end up being dead ends. I want to be left surprised at the ending, admitting that I never saw it coming.

Though I was not surprised at the ending of Chinatown, there certainly were plenty of twists in the plot. A longer movie, at more than 2 hours, that never dragged; Chinatown did not disappoint.

The movie was also extremely aesthetically pleasing. No, I am not referring to Faye Dunaway...entirely. The style chosen for the film was using muted colors and accenting a few greens, blues, yellows and pinks. The stark contrast between the dull scenes and strategically placed vivid colors was great.

A great movie at a great price. I will certainly be adding Chinatown to my collection.

Amores Perros

February 2nd, 2005
Amores PerrosA car accident serves as the bouncing-off point for three separate stories.

This one was added to my viewing queue following a long and artsy review by Moyer. As he and I generally like the same movies, how could I go wrong? I guess I set myself up for a fall with that one. Bring on the irony. I never thought I would utter the following phrase, "This movie was just too dark for me."

3 LONG stories all linked around a car crash scene that opens the movie. Each story not only involves, but is centered around characters' relationships with dogs. I am not a dog person, but I do consider myself an animal lover (go figure). All three "shorts" (I use that term loosely) shows dogs getting either hurt or killed. It was not enough for me to be offended or grossed out or upset, but it did hurt my opinion of the movie.

My thoughts are not all negative towards Amores Perros. I did like how the main characters/dog owners in each story are just like the dogs with which they keep company. Parallels can easily be drawn between the characters and the dogs. In this way to suggest that we are not so unlike dogs and that we are not necessarily as civilized as we like to think was very well done.

I think the percentage of people who would like it is so small that the odds are not in your favor. If you do happen to see it and do like it, I will stand corrected. That said, good and bad both shown above, it is my recommendation that you should pass.
