Category: "DVD Easter Eggs"
From the Main Menu select "Upgrades." From the Upgrades menu, when your cursor (which will look like a wrench) is on "Commentaries" move to the left. You should see crossed wrenches appear on the bottom lefthand corner of the Upgrades title sign. Press enter/select to watch "Mechanical Mistakes - Rodney Loses His Head." This isn't even a film, it is just a short snippet of quite literally a mechanical mistake where Rodney...loses his head. It is only a few seconds long and...not at all impressive. But it's there if you want to find it.
Select "Bonus Materials" from the main DVD screen. With the top option (Feature Commentary) highlighted, move the cursor to the right and the statue on the side of the screen will light up. Press your select/enter button to see a few outtakes. As a practice tip, they might be a little funnier after you've seen the movie. Nothing is spoiled by watching them first, but they're out of context.
From the Main Menu select "Special Features" and then move the cursor to the top option - "A hero's journey: the making of Beowulf." Move the cursor to the left and a piece of the design which divides the screen will glow white. Press enter/select to watch "A Coffee Break with John Malkovich."
If you choose "Bonus Features" from the main menu and have "Outtakes" underlined when move the cursor down you will see a new option appear that reads "One More?" The hidden feature is a brief montage of Steve Carrell asking for additional takes from a few scenes. It is certainly not the most exciting hidden feature, but it was interesting to see how they let him improvise some of his non-speaking scenes.
And even though you didn't ask, there is a great featurette on making the music with Sondre Lerche.
From the Main Menu, highlight and select "Special Features." The Special Features menu has two pages. If you highlight and select "more" you will be taken to the second page. Randal (Jeff Anderson) appears on the right side of the screen. Highlight the top option (Play introduction to film by Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier) and move the cursor to the right. A thought bubble of what appears to be a hamburger will show up by Randal's head. Pressing enter/select will take you to a video where writer/director Kevin Smith talks about "The Askewniverse Bible."
Rather than release a two-disc set, the makers of the Secondhand Lions DVD opted for the double-sided disc. This Easter Egg is on the backside of the DVD. Before or after you watch the movie, flip over the disc for additional special features. Highlight "On The Set with Secondhand Lions (26:06)" and move to the left to see a yellow flower icon appear on the dog's chest. Press enter/select to see a few takes of the scene where Walter (Haley Joel Osment) places a well aimed kick to Stan's groin. The different takes show the different things that Stan (Nicky Katt) says as he falls to the floor post-kick.
From the main screen move the cursor right to "Starz on the Set" and then move the cursor up. The arrow will appear in an empty part of the boat pointing upwards. Press enter to watch a continuous video of takes while they try to create a scene in which Bill Murray tries out a new pair of shoes. It is hard to explain, but they have him keep jumping and running and dancing around as his character, Steve Zissou, might do to test the merit of such a pair of shoes. Ok so I can't explain what it is, but I can say that it is hilarious.
From the Main Menu select "Special Features". On the Special Features menu select the arrows signaling more features. With the top item highlighted (6th Street Bridge - Achieving the Improbable) press right, right, down, down. This will highlight the logo on Sam Jackson's hat. Or from your computer, use your mouse and hover over the logo, it should turn red. Selecting the hidden feature will take you to a video from the S.W.A.T. golf outing that has some pretty hilarious commentary.
There are two relatively easy to find easter eggs on this disc. If you select "Extras" from the Main Menu you will see the list of options with a skull on the top left and another on the bottom right. Both skulls contain hidden features. The top left is a panel discussion with makers of the movie at a screening from Halloween 2001 and the bottom right is a short make-up effects test. Access is simple; highlight the top menu item (Trailer) and move to the left and highlight the bottom menu item (Main Menu) and move to the right. Press select/enter to see the hidden features.
From the Main Menu, highlight "Special Features" and press the right cursor three times. This should light the end of Mario Van Peebles's cigar. Pressing enter/select will play a clip with Mario and Melvin Van Peebles as Mario talks briefly about his perspective on making the film. This easter egg may also be selected (if you are watching on your computer) by simply using your mouse to click on the tip of the cigar.
