i attest to the necessity of white noise. my PC fan usually does the trick as does my window a/c

Before I moved into my current residence my PC was always in my bedroom (as I occupied one room). Now I have my PCs in another room and am forced to look elsewhere for noise. My heat/a/c does the trick though. But that means I have to run it even when my place is a good temperature without any help.

Going with the ceiling fan is never a bad idea. my new place has them in in the master and guest bedroom and they are phenominal for exactly the reasons you mention. the noise is great and the slight breeze they provide mean you can have the A/C set at a higher temp.

I can also say that it does not take rocket science to put one in either, given you already have a light fixture of some type in the location you are trying to use. This may be a do-it-yourselfer jokr.

another alternative: buy a standing oscillating fan. not quite as good, but not quite as much work either.
